2011 Manchester Section Green Mountain Club Winter Schedule

Winter Trips – For All winter hikes please remember the following in addition to your normal hiking gear: spare clothing, lots of snacks, and a warm drink. Also plan on hand warmers and a headlamp (December and January = limited daylight). Snowshoes and traction devices may be required depending on weather conditions, check with your hike leader when you RSVP. Have FUN!

Thursday December 15 – hike or snowshoe to Bromley Summit – meet at 9am at rt 11/30 LT parking lot– hike to summit for lunch – 6 miles, moderate – trip leader Marge Fish, 802-824-3662, marge.fish@gmail.com

Tuesday December 27 – hike to Equinox Summit via Beartown Rd trail – meet at 9am at the parking lot behind the Congregational Church in Manchester Village - about 7 miles, moderate – trip leader Steve Grzyb, 802-362-6108, alyruby@gmail.com

Sunday January 1 – celebrate the New Year - hike to Stratton Pond– meet at 8:30am at the Bondville Post Office to car pool to the trail head (limited parking)– hike to Stratton Pond and back from North Brookwood – 6 miles, moderately easy – trip leader Dave Ratti, 802-366-0698, c/o marge.fish@gmail.com

Sunday January 15 – hike in Merck Forest to Mt Antoine – meet at 8:30am at Shaw’s in Manchester Center to carpool to Merck Forest – hike 6 miles round trip, moderately easy – trip leader Keld Alstrup – 802-362-1422, keld@alstrup.us

Friday January 27 – hike the West River trail from South Londonderry to the campground and back – meet at 9am at the West River Trail Depot building in South Londonderry (across from the Londonderry Inn) to carpool to the trailhead (limited parking) – hike 3.8 miles round trip (though if the group wants to hike longer they can do so by going further into the campground and back), easy – trip leaders Bob Whitney and Tom Houston, 802-375-4125 and 802-875-5493, whitneyrb@gmail.com and thousten@gmail.com

Saturday February 4 – 16th Annual Snow Shoe Festival at Green Mountain Club headquarters in Waterbury Center - for more information CLICK HERE!

February 8-9-10 – 2 ½ days, 2 nights at Wheeler Pond Camps, snowshoeing during the day (moderate difficulty), pot luck meals at night and lots of good company – camping at the Wheeler Pond Camps in the Northeast Kingdom – cost for the camps will be shared equally by all who attend – maximum of 16 people – Click for information about the camps - Trip Leader: Marge Fish, 802-824-3662, marge.fish@gmail.com - need to sign up by January 18 please!

Saturday February 11 – 20th Anniversary Celebration Event for the Taylor Series (the outdoor adventure series of slide shows named after James P Taylor, the founding father of the Long Trail and the Green Mountain Club) – 6:30 at the McCarthy Recital all at St Michael’s College in Burlington Vt – David Roberts “The South east Face of Mount Dickey, Alaska” – for more details and also for information on many other Taylor Series shows look in the Winter Edition of the Long Trail News, pages

Sunday February 12 – hike in Equinox Preservation Trust – EPT to SVAC and back – meet at 9 am at red gate entrance of EPT – hike about 4-5 miles round trip – moderately easy - trip leader Keld Alstrup – 802-362-1422, keld@alstrup.us

Saturday February 18 – hike to the summit of Styles Peak and back - meet at 8:30 am hike at the Peru Post office to car pool to the trail head – hike 5.2 miles round trip – moderate – trip leader Marge Fish, 802-824-3662, marge.fish@gmail.com

Saturday February 25 – hike in the Tinmouth Wildlife Area OR the Aiken Wilderness – leader’s choice – meet at 8:30 am at the Shaw’s in Manchester to carpool to whichever area has been chosen – 4-6 hours of hiking – moderate trail less area, - trip leader Dave Ratti, 802-366-0698, c/o marge.fish@gmail.com

Sunday March 4 – Hike to Lye Brook Falls– meet at noon at the Manchester Center Post Office – hike 5.2 miles round trip - moderate– trip leader Alyson Grzyb, 802-362-6108, alyruby@gmail.com

Saturday March 24 – Manchester Section Taylor Series program at 7pm at the West River Trail Depot building in South Londonderry (across from the Londonderry Inn) – Dave Lacy, USFS archeologist and historian, “Hiking through History”, the history of the area that the Long Trail traverses

Friday March 30 – Spring pot luck supper and planning meeting – 6 pm at Dale and Mike Malekoff’s in South Londonderry – help plan the spring work trips and some June and July group trips and enjoy the company and the pot luck dinner with other Manchester section members – e-mail: Dale Malekoff or phone: 802-824-5030
